About Jacob Shapiro

Professor of Politics and International Affairs: Princeton University

Shapiro directs the Empirical Studies of Conflict Project, a multi-university consortium that supports research on politically motivated violence in countries around the world. His research covers conflict, economic development, misinformation, and security policy. Shapiro received the 2016 Karl Deutsch Award from the International Studies Association, given to a scholar younger than 40, or within 10 years of earning a PhD, who has made the most significant contribution to the study of international relations. Shapiro holds a PhD in political science and a master of arts in economics from Stanford University. He earned a bachelor of arts in political science from the University of Michigan and is a veteran of the US Navy. He is the author of The Terrorist’s Dilemma: Managing Violent Covert Organizations (2013) and the coauthor of Small Wars, Big Data: The Information Revolution in Modern Conflict (2018). Published in a broad range of academic and policy journals and edited volumes, Shapiro has conducted field research and large-scale policy evaluations in Afghanistan, Colombia, India, and Pakistan.
