Professor Martin’s research is on language documentation and revitalization, with a special focus on the indigenous languages of the Southeastern United States. He has authored or edited four academic books on the Muskogee (Creek) language. In recent work he has collaborated with tribal nations to compile dictionaries of Mikasuki, Koasati, and Choctaw and to do video documentation of Muskogee. At W&M he has been the President of the Faculty Assembly, Chair of the English Department, and Director of Linguistics. He has taught at W&M since 1995, and has also taught at the University of Michigan, Rice University, Leiden University, and the University of Florida.
