About Jack Pinkowski

Jack Pinkowski, Ph.D. is a member of the Deans' Academic Council with principal responsibility for the department of public administration. He served as chair of all of the search committees for new public administration and real estate development faculty members and acts as mentor to new faculty. He is the driving force behind the application for accreditation for the Master of Public Administration (MPA) degree program by the Network of Schools of Public Affairs and Administration (NASPAA), which is ongoing. 

Dr. Pinkowski is the Founding Director of the NSU Institute of Government and Public Policy (IGPP). The IGPP is a way for NSU to serve the community by applying business, management, and cross-discipline expertise in collaboration across the university to solve problems and conduct research on public sector issues. The institute pursues external funding for research and consulting with public sector organizations and public interest foundations. 

Dr. Pinkowski is principal researcher or facilitator on many of projects including VisionBROWARD, a public/private economic development initiative of the Broward County Board of Commissioners, the Broward Workshop, the Broward Alliance, and the Broward League of Cities. This was a strategic community visioning process that involved nearly 1,000 individuals and groups including private businesses leaders, the educational community, local governments, and community organizations to chart the future course of Broward County through 2025. 

Jack previously served the H. Wayne Huizenga School of Business and Entrepreneurship as Executive Director of Executive Education and Educational Outreach Programs that included responsibility for the Hudson Institute of Entrepreneurship and Executive Education, which concentrates on training and non-degree education for private firms, and the International Institute for Franchise Education, which focuses its training and development programs on franchising companies. 

He has been the director of the Master of Public Administration (MPA) program and teaches the capstone course as well as other courses. Dr. Pinkowski is also actively involved with curriculum development in public administration including organization theory, public budgeting and finance, fund accounting, comparative government, globalization, economic development and American government. 

Dr. Pinkowski is faculty chair for public administration with primary responsibility for all curricula in the masters and doctoral programs. With more than twenty-five years as a successful business entrepreneur himself, Dr. Pinkowski combines real-world experience with academic credentials that enhance the several programs that he oversees. 

Jack’s past corporate entities have included the import-export trade from Southeast Asia, Central America, and Europe. He managed a wholesale distribution network across the United States and the Caribbean in the furniture and decorative home accessories markets as well as several retail locations in New Jersey, Georgia, and South Carolina. He owned and operated a light-manufacturing, furniture enterprise with a sales force consisting of independent agents across the country and with permanent exhibition showrooms in all of the major wholesale market centers. The Renaissance man has also previously owned and operated a charter boat operation and sailing-instruction school in Hilton Head, South Carolina. He personally holds a 100-ton Master’s License from the U.S. Coast Guard and is licensed to captain large motor driven as well as sailing vessels. Jack is also an accomplished professional photographer. 

Recent business investments by Dr. Pinkowski have concentrated on commercial real estate. Earlier in his career he was active in business continuation and estate planning as well as financial markets. He earned a CLU (Charter Life Underwriter) designation, taking coursework at the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania as well as at the American College. He has been a member of the NASD (National Association of Security Dealers), the Million Dollar Round Table, Optimist International. 

His current professional organization memberships include the American Society for Public Administration (ASPA), the American Political Science Association (APSA), the International City/County Management Association (ICMA), the Association for Budgeting and Financial Management (ABFM), Academy of Political Science,Pi Alpha Alpha National Honor Society in Public Administration, ASPA Section on Intergovernmental Administration and Management (SIAM), ASPA Section on Ethics (ETHICS), International City/County Management Association (ICMA), National Tax Association (NTA), ASPA Section on International and Comparative Administration (SICA), ASPA Section on Public Administration Education (SPAE), ASPA Section on Public Administration Research (SPAR). He has also been a member of The Florida City/County Managers Association (FCCMA), 

Jack has served as an officer in many volunteer and civic organizations including president of the Association of Doctoral Students in Public Administration (ADSPA) and has received many honors as a result of his association involvement including: Man of the Month several times and Committee Chairman of the Year by the Philadelphia Jaycees; Commander of the Year by District 26 of the United States Power Squadrons; an honoree of the American Society of Collegiate Scholars; recipient of the Lloyd Hampton Memorial Award from the Savannah Home Furnishings Association, and; Pi Alpha Alpha, the public administration honor society. He is the founder and academic advisor for the NSU chapter of Pi Alpha Alpha. 

He is also a member of the Cosmos Club in Washington, DC, which is an by invitation only private social club, incorporated in Washington, D.C. in 1878 for people distinguished in science, literature and the arts. Among its members, over the years, have been three Presidents, two Vice Presidents, a dozen Supreme Court justices, 32 Nobel Prize winners, 56 Pulitzer Prize winners and 45 recipients of the Presidential Medal of Freedom. Jack has also been recognized as a member of MENSA, the national high IQ honor society. 

Jack’s public administration connection came about as a result of extensive time contributed as an unpaid volunteer and researcher for local governments and nonprofit organizations. He is responsible for the renovation and grant-funding for several public park projects in Savannah, Georgia, an analysis of the intergovernmental response to hazardous materials spills, the investigation of the equity of land-use planning adjoining hazardous material storage sites, and the potential exposure to contamination of community drinking water supplies with recommendations for associated land-use policy to mitigate pollution hazards. He also drafted water management laws that were adopted by local governments to protect their water sources as a result of his research and recommendations. 

Jack Pinkowski earned his Ph.D. from Florida Atlantic University in Boca Raton, Florida, a master's in public administration (MPA) from Georgia Southern University in Statesboro, Georgia, and undergraduate degrees from Temple University and Central High School in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Of interest is the unique authority for a high school to award bachelor’s degrees, which dates to the early nineteenth century when Central High School in Philadelphia was chartered by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania to maintain a college level curriculum and develop academic talent within a public institution. The school has many famous and successful graduates. 

Dr. Pinkowski’s research interests include various issues in disaster management and preparedness, public finance, economic development, globalization, international economic and organizational impacts of the Internet, the evolution of e-commerce and its impacts on state and local government finance, and other issues of public policy.
