About Jack De Jong

Prior to this position, I earned my Doctor of Philosophy in International Management from the University of Hawaii with a specialization in Asian Finance and was an Assistant Professor of Finance at the University of Hawaii’s School of Travel Industry Management. I earned my MBA in Finance at the University of Chicago. Between my MBA degree and my Ph.D. degree, I spent ten years as owner and general manager of Van’s Furniture, Inc., a large retail furniture store, where I managed finances, operations, and personnel. 

My research interests include the areas of Exchange Traded Funds and Mutual Funds, Asset Pricing, Portfolio Management, Retirement Planning, Executive Compensation, Market Microstructures, Equity Carve-Outs and Spin-offs, and International Finance. 

My teaching interests include investments, corporate finance, financial markets, banking, international finance, and Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) courses. At Nova, I enjoy teaching both the required MBA finance course, FIN 5080, Managerial Finance, as well as finance electives at both graduate and undergraduate levels, including FIN 5620, Investments, FIN 5560, Advanced Financial Policies, and FIN 3130, Security Analysis. 

My most recent publication was "The Cost of Guaranteed Income: Demystifying the Value Proposition of Variable Annuities with Guaranteed Lifetime Withdrawal Benefit (GLWB) Riders" in the Retirement Management Journal. Other publications include: the article “Are Lifecycle Funds Getting a Bum Rap? A Comprehensive Comparison of Lifecycle versus Lifestyle Retirement Strategies from Accumulation through Withdrawal,” which was published in the Journal of Wealth Management, the article "Reality Check: The Implications of Applying Sustainable Withdrawal Rate Analysis to Real World Portfolios," which was published in the Financial Services Review and the article "Abnormal Returns with Momentum/Contrarian Strategies Using Exchange Traded Funds," which was published in the Journal of Asset Management. In addition, I received Best Paper Awards at the Academy of Financial Services Conference in 2008 and 2010. 

My interest in retirement planning, motivated me to become Co-Founder of Nest Egg Guru (http://www.nesteggguru.com/)which is a unique, intuitive application for providing meaningful information to help individuals test and evaluate their retirement preparedness via the Retirement Savings Calculator (http://nesteggguru.com/how-much-will-I-have/premium-retirement-savings-calculator)and the Retirement Spending Calculator (http://nesteggguru.com/how-long-will-it-last/premium-retirement-spending-calculator). 

I am an active investor in the stock market, developing and utilizing strategies gained through pursuing a Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) Charterholder designation, which recognizes excellence in investment professionals. I am a member of CFA Society of South Florida and former member of CFA Society of Hawai’i. 

In my varied community volunteer positions, I applied business skills to non-profit situations and gained valuable experience in planning, budgeting, organizing, and directing personnel and operations with complex stakeholder relationships. I have served as chairperson of the Administrative Board of a large church, school board member, and board member for several non–profit organizations. Together with my wife Terri, I have served as a high school youth group leader at our church, leader and treasurer for Reformed Marriage Encounter, and a foster parent in Michigan, Hawaii, and Florida.
