About Jacalyn M. Griffen

I am the Manager, Credentials, Graduate Assessment, & Career Services and a Visiting Assistant Professor for the Benerd School of Education. I advise and ensure credential candidates meet CA state CTC standards and teach graduate level methods courses.

Explored through critical and social justice frameworks, I employ an action-inquiry focus to bring change to the status quo of institutionalized barriers that hinder the engagement of historically marginalized students and families in the educational system.  I am drawn to study local contexts due to the complex social issues faced by students, families, and the educational systems they must navigate.

The multiple roles I traverse as a socially engaged scholar means I cultivate my life experiences to root my research agenda in many years of experience in various roles in the local K-12 system. I continue to evolve my understanding through education and research experiences.  This background knowledge informs the overarching goal of my research agenda, to understand the barriers to improving educational access for students in historically underserved communities by empowering their families to engage in the process.  Through a critical-advocacy lens, I employ a number of qualitative methods to find to explore how marginalized families experience institutionalized systemic barriers preventing them from turning aspirations into action.  Action inquiry helps me rupture ingrained assumptions to find the counter narratives in the educational challenges I explore.  I endeavor to make positive cultural changes while turning knowledge into action. The common thread throughout my work as a qualitative action researcher and practitioner is the importance of establishing relationships.  I take careful and ethical consideration of how my study participants experience the research process as I work with undocumented families and students, students with disabilities, and families from marginalized communities.  Collaboration and collegiality with peers, faculty members, and scholars within and outside of my institution, P-12 administrators, students, and families are the hallmark of my scholarship and practice.
