Fire in Religion & Nature of a Changing African Culture
The Bloomsbury Handbook of Religion and Nature: The Elements (2017)
  • Isabel Mukonyora
Abstract
This chapter looks at how ideas about fire have changed alongside problems of social change now associated with religion and the threat to planetary life being caused by climate change among the Shona in Zimbabwe. Fire changes in meaning from being an elements of nature through which to support life, promote social and environmental justice in precolonial Zimbabwe into a just weapon for destroying human life and whatever other forms of life belong to the same environment.
