Iria Giuffrida is a Professor of the Practice of Law at William & Mary Law School. She now serves as the Assistant Dean for Academic & Faculty Affairs focusing on adjunct faculty matters and academic components of the Law School’s online and executive education programs. Previously, she held the roles of Interim Director of the LL.M. Programs and Deputy Director of the Center of Legal & Court Technology.

Professor Giuffrida’s research focuses on the legal issues arising from the increasing use of artificial intelligence, the rapid growth of the Internet of Things (IoT), and related emerging technologies. She has an interest in smart cities and IoT, which she researches through the lens of governance, privacy, and cybersecurity. She pursues interdisciplinary research and regularly collaborates with scholars from the Business School, the School of Education, as well as departments of Computer Science within and outside William & Mary.

She is involved in grant-funded experiential projects aimed at creating a diverse talent pipeline for the cybersecurity industry and participates in other grant-funded projects such as those funded by the Commonwealth Cyber Initiative.

Professor Giuffrida teaches the Law School’s innovative artificial intelligence course and co-teaches an interdisciplinary seminar on cyber and information security with a team of professors from the Mason School of Business and William & Mary’s Department of Computer Science. Her teaching portfolio includes International Business Transactions, International Commercial Arbitration, and Mediation. She has also taught Legal Environment of Business and Business Law to undergraduate and graduate students at the Raymond A. Mason School of Business.

In her previous professional life, she was a commercial litigator with Dechert LLP (in the London and Brussels offices) and Enyo Law LLP, a big-ticket specialist litigation firm in London. She has substantial experience in alternative dispute resolution having been involved in a number of ICC and LCIA arbitrations as well as mediations concerning competition law, international joint-venture disputes, energy disputes and construction law. She has advised clients in a wide range of commercial matters and has particular experience in complex and multijurisdictional financial services disputes, breach of fiduciary duties and restitution-based claims.

She is admitted to practice in the State of New York, is a Solicitor in England and Wales, and is qualified as a Solicitor in the Republic of Ireland. She is also a certified information privacy professional (CIPP/US).

Prior to practicing law, Professor Giuffrida taught law in the U.S. and in the U.K., and worked for the European Ombudsman in Brussels.
