Guest Professor in International Human Rights
In 2010, Ida Elisabeth Koch was appointed Guest Professor in International Human Rights Law at the Faculty of Law, Lund University, Sweden. From 2009-2011 she has furthermore functioned as the Managing Director of the Masters Programme in International Human Rights Law. She holds a Ph.D degree from the University of Copenhagen, 1995.
Previously, Ida Elisabeth Koch has among other appointments, served as a Senior Researcher at The Danish Institute for Human Rights (1992-1995) and (1997-2009). Moreover, she has been a visiting scholar at universities in the UK, the USA and Italy. In recent years her research interest has in particular covered economic, social and cultural rights, the notion of the indivisibility of human rights and judicial review including the justiciability of human rights as indivisible rights. She has published extensively on these issues in the form of articles, contributions to anthologies etc. In addition she has authored a monograph on the notion of the indivisibility of human rights Human Rights as Indivisible Rights – the Protection of Socio-Economic Demands under the European Convention on Human Rights, Martinus Nijhoff Publishers, 2009.
In this context she has applied a hermeneutic approach to human rights interpretation.
Moreover, the issue of division of powers in a democratic society has been subject to research in a number of articles and in a contribution to the Danish Power Analysis, Menneskerettigheder og magtfordeling. Domstolskontrol med politiske prioriteringer (Human Rights and the Division of Powers – Judicial Control with Political Priorities) together with Kristine Røberg, Sten Schaumburg-Müller and Jens Vedsted-Hansen, Århus University Publ., 2004.
Thus, in her most recent research Ida Elisabeth Koch has in particular been occupied with conceptual clarification e.g. with regard to the notion of human rights as indivisible rights. Moreover, she has explored the issues of division of powers and judicial review in a democratic society in particular with regard to human rights as indivisible rights.
Presently, Ida Elisabeth Koch continues her research by focusing on the links between notions such as democracy, rule of law, human rights and good governance particularly in a Council of Europe context.
Ida Elisabeth Koch is a member of the Editorial Board of European Human Rights Law Review. She has taught human rights law in a variety of contexts most recently at the International Human Rights Masters Programme at the Faculty of Law, Lund University.
