Abstract
Due to China’s rapid economic and social development, ancient towns, cities and streets that are part of Chinese heritage are facing destruction. Though these changes present good development opportunities, however there is tremendous pressure to preserve these heritage sites. At the macro level, the planning of preservation of historical towns and cities should be a highly efficient system of planning and organization that takes in to consideration the traditional culture, historic architecture, and the size of ancient town, such that it can ensure that the local cultures are preserved and developed. Through the studies and analysis of ancient Chinese and foreign towns, it can be proposed that the innovative concept, “Variation Courtyards as Extensional Functions of Ancient Town” can be applied. This is a new system of balance between ancient and new neighborhood, that allows creatively merging in the diversely public space, and ensures that the ancient town or city will be developed with sustainability. This concept has been applied to the biggest preserved area of Pudong – Xinchang Ancient Town in the city of Shanghai.
