About Howard Van Auken

My primary research interests are in the area of smaller firm financing and entrepreneurship. The failure/discontinuance rate of newer firms is well known. About 50%(805) of new firms are not in existence after 3 (5) years. Research has consistently shown that poor financial management is one of the main reasons for the failure of new firms. Much of my research has examined the acquisition of capital by smaller firms. My research has examined the acquisition of start-up and growth capital by different types of firms (including women and minority owned firms). Other research has compared the financial strategies of smaller firms in different countries.
