About Henry Roukema

Dr. Henry Roukema is a neonatologist at the Children's Hospital (LHSC) and an associate professor in the Department of Paediatrics at the Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry, Western University.

Dr. Henry Roukema is a Neonatologist at Children’s Hospital at London Health Sciences Centre and an Associate Professor at the Western University in the Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry with a full time faculty appointment.  He graduated from UWO Medical School in 1987, completed a Paediatric Residency at UWO in 1992 and completed a Fellowship in Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine at the University of Toronto 1995.  Further education includes a Masters in Clinical Epidemiology from the University of Toronto in 2003.

Dr. Roukema is Director of Nurseries at the Children’s Hospital at London Health Sciences Centre and he has administrative interests and responsibilities locally, in the Southwest Region and Provincially.  He was the physician leader in the design and transition of the NICU to Children’s Hospital at London Health Sciences Centre.  Regionally, he is an active member of the Perinatal Outreach Team and is on the Executive Committee of the Southwestern Ontario Maternal, Newborn, Child and Youth Network. Provincially he is active administratively through PCMCH in the areas of Access to Services, establishing guidelines and capacity for maternal and newborn care, the PCMCH Benchmarking report, Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome guidelines and neonatal transport.

Research interests include medical informatics, practice guidelines and benchmarking in order to foster optimal and efficient care.   Other research interests include fetal toxicology, fetal alcohol exposure and the effects of maternal narcotic addiction on long-term child and family health and attachment. Philosophically he is interesting in promoting a culture to foster patient safety, family centred care and developmental neonatal care while promoting wellness in at-risk newborns and minimizing interventions.
