Prioritizing the "I" in IEP: The Importance of School Based SLP and MFT Collaborations
ASHA Schools Conference (2015)
  • Henriette W. Langdon, San José State University
Abstract
The IEP is designed to provide a unique treatment approach for students with special education needs to ensure their success in the school environment. Some SLP training programs offer courses in counseling students who have various language-based disabilities, but others do not. Comparatively, some school districts have asked school psychologists and even LMFTs (Marriage and Family Therapists) to take over the counseling piece of the social-emotional goals listed on the IEPs. Professionals well-versed in psychology or counseling may not be as familiar with language or speech-language pathology. Collaboration between SLP and MFT practitioners, who are all involved in the IEP process, is pivotal. This process will be illustrated in this poster, and roles in the IEP will be defined.
