Abstract

This article discusses the importance of three contextual variables in ensuring Hispanic individuals' success in learning English by citing various examples taken from the author's experience. These contexts include consideration of the impact of majority social context and its attitude toward immigrants, the individual's family views on the importance of acquiring English, and the classroom instructional strategies used. Implications for monolingual and bilingual speech-language pathologists evaluating Hispanic students who are suspected of having language-learning disabilities are discussed.
