Abstract
This article reviews existing literature on the relationship between urban form and mental well-being as a step towards providing an action framework for urban designers and planners. After defining mental well-being, we identify and discuss the pertinent literature. The focus of this review is on the environmental qualities that may have impact on hedonic, psychological, and social aspects of mental well-being. This analysis led us to propose a theoretical framework that provide a rationale for action. In addition, the gaps we found in the existing literature lead us to suggest future research directions. The article’s main goal is to pave the road towards a comprehensive instrument that can help direct interventions on urban form that promote mental well-being.
