About Gyongyi Szabo

Dr. Gyongyi Szabo, M.D., Ph.D., is Professor of Medicine in the Division of Gastroenterology, Department of Medicine, University of Massachusetts Medical School. Her current bench research activities include: (1) Immune alterations induced by acute alcohol consumption; (2) Intracellular signaling pathways in leukocytes mediating altered cytokine production after acute alcohol use; (3) Immune mechanisms leading to increased liver injury in HCV plus alcohol; and (4) Immunopathogenesis of liver injury in obese mice. Clinical research activities include (1) Immune mechanisms of increased liver injury in HCV plus alcohol (overlap with bench research project #3); (2) Therapeutic studies in chronic hepatitis C; (3) Therapeutic approaches in non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH); and (4) Fatty liver disease in morbidly obese patients undergoing bariatric surgery.
