A multi-stakeholder quality function deployment approach to support design decision-making

Abstract
The applications of QFD are widespread in numerous areas such as product development, quality
management, planning and decision-making. Despite this fact however, the standard QFD has limitations in
handling multi-attributes during design parameter evaluations, and in incorporating conflicts among design
attributes. Consequently, the multi-criteria nature of most engineering/design problems diminishes the
power of QFD, and makes it difficult to comprehensively deploy in practical applications. This study, first,
points out related limitations of QFD. Then, it proposes an improved QFD approach, which is embedded
with a multi-criteria decision-making method. A case study is also provided to demonstrate the practicality
of the proposed method.
