Design for Sustainability During Conceptual Design Stage

Abstract
Due to the increasing concern on environmental impact and lifecycle considerations, product sustainability has
gradually become an important focus in product development process. How to effectively incorporate
sustainability issues into product design is still a question, however. In this study, sustainability consideration is
integrated into a set-based product conceptual design process. In traditional conceptual design process, mostly
customer preferences and product functionality are focused on. However, product sustainability is an undeniable
point which directly affects customers’ purchasing motivation. Therefore, when designing a new product,
acquiring customers’ preference on product lifecycle expectation is also a must. Manufacturers’ viewpoint of
view might consider different sustainability concerns. Costs of adopting sustainable materials and environmental
concerns are extremely critical. In this study, we integrate both viewpoints into our set-based conceptual design
process. In this process, interval data envelopment analysis (DEA) model is used to eliminate unworkable
designs and converge to a set of possible product design alternatives. A case study based on actual data
demonstrates the entire process. The results show that the proposed methodology is effective.
