Abstract

In this paper, I propose a conception of canonical deponency in language; I then demonstrate that instances of canonical deponency are susceptible to two very different analyses; I then examine a particular pattern of non-canonical deponency and its implications for choosing between the contrasting analyses to which canonical deponency is subject.
