Professor Stein joined the UT faculty in 1990 after practicing law with Paul, Weiss, Rifkind, Wharton & Garrison in New York. His practice experience covered various aspects of real estate finance and development and land use, and he currently teaches courses in these areas. His scholarship in these fields has been published in numerous law journals, including those at Ohio State, Pepperdine, Tennessee, Vanderbilt, Vermont, Washington, and Washington & Lee. He also is the co-author of a book, now in its third edition, that helps attorneys develop their expertise in commercial real estate law. He served as Associate Dean for Faculty Development at the College of Law from 2009 through 2016.

Professor Stein was a Visiting Fulbright Professor of Law at Shanghai Jiaotong University, Shanghai, People’s Republic of China, during the spring semester of 2003 and returned to Shanghai as a Fulbright Specialist during the summer of 2005. During his time in China, he had the opportunity to conduct research into Chinese real estate law, with a focus on how real estate professionals in China operate against an uncertain and rapidly evolving legal backdrop. He has since published a book and several articles in this area, focusing on how published law differs from the law as actually practiced.

Professor Stein is a Fellow of the American College of Real Estate Lawyers, a member of its Board of Governors, the Co-Chair of its Law Professors Committee, and a former member of its Member Selection Committee. He has served as Chair of the Real Estate Transactions Section of the Association of American Law Schools and as an observer to the NCCUSL Drafting Committee on Partition of Heirs Property. He also has served as co-chair and vice-chair of the Legal Education Committee of the American Bar Association Section of Real Property, Trust and Estate Law, a member of the ABA Property Preservation Task Force, and a member of the Executive Advisory Board of the Real Property, Trust and Estate Journal. He speaks regularly on various aspects of real estate law.

Professor Stein received the Marilyn V. Yarbrough Award for Writing Excellence in 2012 and 2008, the W. Allen Separk Faculty Scholarship Award in 2006, the Provost’s Award for Excellence in Teaching in 2003, and the Carden Award for Outstanding Achievement in Scholarship in 2001. He also was awarded the Harold C. Warner Outstanding Teacher Award in 2001 and 1992. One of Professor Stein’s articles was selected for the Excellence in Writing Award for the Best Overall Article to appear in the journal “Probate and Property” in 2007.
