Abstract

This paper discusses comments practicing middle grade and secondary mathematics teachers made during chat sessions about mathematics teaching during a six week summer online course. WebCT chat sessions were analyzed to determine themes. Five themes were found that both supported and contradicted current research findings. Teacher belief structures were found to be the most influential variable in how students interpreted class readings and reacted to real-time comments. Implications of these findings are discussed in relation to professional development opportunities and teacher education programs.
