Abstract
High Concentration Beetroot Juice Supplement Improves Cycling Power, VO2 Peak, Time to Exhaustion, Anaerobic Threshold and Heart Rate at Sub Anaerobic Threshold in Trained Cyclists
Purpose: Determine the effects of nitric oxide on cycling power, time to exhaustion, heart rate, oxygen consumption, and sub anaerobic threshold Heart rate in trained cyclists after a single dose of a high concentrate dietary nitric oxide supplement.  Methods: Twenty-two highly trained male and female cyclists (6 female, 16 male).  Age mean 37.63 +/- 11 year, body composition 73.25 +/- 8.76 kg, body fat percent 17.22 +/- 8.47% and peak VO2 53.94 +/- 9.26 mls/kg/min.  Participated in a double-blind, randomized study in which participants consumed either a single-dose 4-5 ounces of low dose organic beet juice powder (placebo) or a highly concentrated beetroot endurance superfood two hours before performing a volitional max cycling test on a stationary trainer (Wahoo Fitness, KICKR).  Subjects performed a baseline cycling test to volitional fatigue following a ramped protocol starting at 150 watts, 10-minute warm-up,  male with a 20 watt increase per minute and 100 watt 10-minute warm-up female with a 15 watt increase per minute to volitional fatigue.  Results: Compared to placebo group, the intervention group increased power in watts 7.14% (302.8 +/-45.7 watts vs 338.1 +/- 57.5 watts, p = 0.137); time to fatigue 7.62% (1177.7 seconds +/- 160.7 vs 1248.8 +/- 126 seconds, p = .0191; VO2 Peak 10.37% (51.0 +/- 7.1 vs 56.9 +/- 9.3 mls/kg/min, p = .0188); Anaerobic Threshold 4.27% (44.8 +/- 6.4 mls/kg/min vs 46.8 +/- 9.1 mls/kg/min, p = .002) Heart Rate Threshold at 210 watts 3.77% (156.6 +/- 20.4 vs 150.7 +/- 15.6, p = .00003.  Conclusions: The outcomes from this study are clear, a single-dose of a high concentration nitric oxide dietary supplement, 2-hours before intensive cycling demonstrated improvements in peak power, increased time to exhaustion, increased VO2 peak, higher anaerobic threshold and a reduced heart rate at sub-anaerobic threshold.
