Dr. Grant Black is Director of the Center for Entrepreneurship and Economic Education and Teaching Professor of Economics at the University of Missouri-St. Louis. He received his Ph.D. in economics from Georgia State University in 2001. Prior to coming to UMSL, he was an associate professor of economics at Indiana University South Bend where he directed both the Center for Economic Education and the Bureau of Business and Economic Research. In 2002 he was a visiting professor at the University of Pretoria in South Africa.

Dr. Black has taught both undergraduate and graduate courses, including introductory macroeconomics; introductory microeconomics; introduction to the American economy; labor economics; energy, economics and the environment; survey of economics; money, banking, and monetary theory; advanced undergraduate seminar in economics; microeconomics for the school curriculum; and economic issues for the school curriculum. He is actively involved in teacher training, student programming, and curriculum development to increase economic and financial literacy. He has authored and contributed to educational resources, including Taking Control of Your Credit Teacher's Guide and lessons for Math in the Real World. In 2013 he participated in the Council for Economic Education's Training of Writers program.

His research has focused on the economics of science and innovation, local and regional economic issues, and economic education. He has contributed to research funded by the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation, the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, the Kauffman Foundation, the National Science Foundation, the National Bureau of Economic Research, the South African Revenue Service, and the United States Agency for International Development. He is the author of the book, The Geography of Small Firm Innovation, and his research has been the focus of articles in diverse publications, including Economic Inquiry, Research Policy, Economic Development Quarterly, Science and Public Policy, and Growth and Change. He served as a consultant to the Board on Science, Technology and Economic Policy at the National Academy of Sciences and participated in the Scientific Workforce Project sponsored by the National Bureau of Economic Research. He also served as a member of the Committee on the Future U.S. Workforce for Geospatial Intelligence for the National Research Council. He has served as a reviewer for the International Review of Economic Education, Journal of Economic Geography, Journal of Engineering and Technology Management, Journal of Technology Transfer, Public Finance Review, Research Policy, Science and Public Policy, Small Business Economics, Social Studies of Science, McGraw-Hill Publishers, and the National Science Foundation.

Dr. Black was elected into the Faculty Colloquium on Excellence in Teaching at Indiana University in 2010 and received the Michiana Forty Under 40 Award for professional and community service in 2009. He received the Excellence in Research, Excellence in Teaching, and Excellence in Service awards numerous times from the School of Business and Economics at Indiana University South Bend. He also received the Excellence in Teaching Award from the Andrew Young School of Policy Studies at Georgia State University. He has regularly provided commentary to the media, including more than 200 interviews. He is a member of the American Economic Association, Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis's Education Advisory Board, and the National Association of Economic Educators. He is treasurer for the Missouri Jump$tart Coalition for Personal Financial Literacy. He also serves as a member of the St. Louis Financial Education Collaborative and on the organizing committee for Money Smart Week St. Louis Metro. He is a member of Omicron Delta Epsilon, the international economics honor society.
