Abstract
“Do it yourself” (DIY) urbanism describes a group of related spatial cultural practices, generally aimed at making informal physical alterations to the urban built environment. It has been used to refer both to interventions that are explicitly functional and those that may be more radical, political, or artistic. Though informal urbanisms occur all over the world, DIY urbanism is often used in the context of the contemporary cities of the Global North. Actions can range from subtle and innocuous local improvements to potentially dangerous and illegal provocations, and some have become associated with mainstream planning trends. Some argue that these ostensibly populist activities actually reproduce their own social inequalities.
