Do-It-Yourself Urban Design in the Help-Yourself City
Architect (2012)
  • Gordon Douglas, University of Chicago
Abstract
The article discusses the trend in U.S. cities of do-it-yourself, informal and spontaneous urban design interventions. The author discusses historical antecedents of informal design including interventions pioneered by the Situationists in the 1960s and the graffiti art of the 1970s. The author comments that spontaneous interventions reflect a reaction to the formalized processes of urbanism itself.
