About Gerald Leonard Cohen

Dr. Cohen earned a doctorate in Slavic linguistics at Columbia University, with proficiency in French, German, Russian, and two other Slavic languages. His dissertation was The Stress of the Russian Short Adjective: A Diachronic Study.

On Sept. 1, 1968, Dr. Gerald Cohen, professor of Russian and German joined the Missouri S&T faculty (formerly the University of Missouri--Rolla). Dr. Cohen, a professor of arts, languages, and philosophy, was hired to teach Russian and German or French. Starting off teaching Russian and German, in the mid-1970s, Cohen began solely teaching French for the next decade. He later switched to teaching German and etymology.

Dr. Cohen has taught general linguistics and Russian, French, German, and occasionally Latin, Greek, and Hebrew. His research interests include a variety of topics of etymology.

On September 12, 2018, the College of Arts, Sciences, and Business (CASB) honored Dr. Gerald L. Cohen and Dr. Gary J. Long – two professors who have shared five decades of teaching and research excellence with Missouri S&T.
