Abstract
The Mediterranean is dotted with islands, and sailing is the skill that connects these dots of communication and commerce. Here we explore the art of sailing in the ancient Greco-Roman world, including the role and technical expertise of the helmsman and other deck officers, methods of steering, and the procedures for recognizing and dealing with maritime obstacles, such as anchorages and sea conditions. We also consider navigational tools and procedures, and the question of ancient charts.
