Abstract

Presents information to help rating scale users organize a rationale for scale use and evaluate the adequacy of available scales. Discussion includes issues related to selecting a rating scale to meet user needs, such as user friendliness, scale format, score interpretation, reliability, and validity. Various methods of establishing the validity of a rating scale are discussed in relation to (1) measuring the trait validity and (2) using the scale to serve its intended purpose. Effects are described that rating scale score distribution can have on a scale's validity for specific purposes. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2012 APA, all rights reserved)
