Abstract
Presents information to help rating scale users organize a rationale for scale use and evaluate the adequacy of available scales. Discussion includes issues related to selecting a rating scale to meet user needs, such as user friendliness, scale format, score interpretation, reliability, and validity. Various methods of establishing the validity of a rating scale are discussed in relation to (1) measuring the trait validity and (2) using the scale to serve its intended purpose.
