Abstract
Background: In this case report, upper extremity deep venous thrombosis (UEDVT) is discussed with special attention to the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention in palliative care patients.
Methods: A 43-year-old female with a history of metastatic breast cancer presented with a UEDVT. Standard anticoagulation was unsuccessful, so after a complete discussion about the treatment options, alternative therapy was used for clot lysis.
Conclusion: Aggressive treatment of UEDVT in a palliative care setting has the potential for improving the quality of life, yet because of the increased risk of complications and philosophy of palliative medicine, the treatment strategy for each patient should be carefully considered.
