Policies for Our People: Student Employment Practices Responding to Pandemic and Climate Disasters
International Writing Centers Association Conference (2023)
  • J. Gabe Gossett, Western Washington University
Abstract
This presentation focused on policies to support student employee well-being and income security in the face of a variety of uncertain circumstances. From the COVID-19 pandemic to climate emergencies to climbing cost-of-living expenses, there are large world-wide situations that impact learning support work. While we may be limited in addressing these issues writ large, we can and should provide whatever supports we can for our student employees. This presentation highlights program policy development to help impede transmissible diseases in the workplace and implementation of a temporary accommodations procedure to support individual needs on a case-by-case basis.
