New forms of commercial communications in a converged audiovisual sector (2014)

Abstract
This contribution gives an overview of the requirements for commercial communications that follow from European data protection law. In many cases, the Data Protection Directive applies to new forms of commercial communications, and lays down requirements when personal data are processed. Furthermore, the e-Privacy Directive requires consent for the use of most tracking technologies, such as tracking cookies. As targeting and personalisation become more relevant for the audiovisual media sector, so will data protection law.
