About Fred Carroll

Fred Carroll is a lecturer in the Department of History and Philosophy. He teaches the U.S. history survey courses and researches African American, U.S. South, and journalism history in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. His first book, Race News: Black Journalists and the Fight for Racial Justice in the Twentieth Century (University of Illinois Press, 2017), won the 2018 Best Journalism and Mass Communication History Book Award from the History Division of the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication (AEJMC). He was also named a 2018 finalist for the AEJMC's Tankard Award. Carroll graduated from the College of William and Mary with a doctorate degree in history in 2012.
