Abstract

The goal of this study was to determine the carbon distribution and states in a medium carbon, low alloy steel to support efforts to develop a physics based model to represent the microstructure evolution during the martensitic transformation. Atom probe tomography (APT) and Mössbauer spectroscopy were used to examine the medium carbon, low alloy steel after a fast and slow quenching from 975°C to room temperature and after a low temperature tempering treatment of 1 h at 215°C
