Abstract
Ercker was born in the Saxon mining town of Annaberg and attended the University of Wittenberg.  He became an assay master at about age twenty five and in 1556 published a pamphlet on assaying, dedicated to the Prince of Saxony.  He became master of the mint at Goslar in 1558; there he diligently continued his studies in mining, smelting, and assaying practices in preparation for the publication of the important book Mineralischen Ertzt und Berckwercks Arten, first appeared in Prague in 1574.
