Abstract
The Industrial Revolution took place in England in the18th and 19th centuries and was responsible for the shift from wood burning to coal burning economy, for the replacement of coal by coke in the blast furnace, and for the tremendous increase in iron production - - thanks to the invention of the steam engine. Iron was the core of civil and military material of construction. As a result, England became the master of the world. The Industrial Revolution also marks the beginning of capitalism and the starting of colonialism. While the materials today are focused towards nano-particles, borides, carbides, etc., the materials during the industrial revolution were mainly coke, coal tar and the chemicals derived from its distillation products like benzene, naphthalene, anthracene from which dyestuffs and pharmaceuticals were prepared. Magnesium oxide was prepared for the first time on large amounts to be used as refractories. It was one of the materials that greatly advanced the steel industry the basis of our civilization.
