Abstract
Dmitri Ivanovich Mendeleev (1834-1907) was a Russian chemist and founder of the Periodic System of the Elements. He was teaching at the University of Saint Petersburg when he was forced to resign. He studied the petroleum industry in Baku at that time a part of the Russian Empire.
