About Prof. FAN Cheng-ze, Simon

Simon Fan’s research interests span the fields of social economics, labor economics, development economics, and public economics. He has published two scholarly books and about forty papers in refereed journals. For example, his book, Culture, Institution, and Development in China: The Economics of National Character (2016, Routledge) demonstrates the endogenous evolution of “national character” along with the changing institutional environments by applying the “political Coase theorem” and other economic theories (See a synopsis of the book here: English and Chinese.) This book addressed the unique role of the “national character” in violence, international conflicts, and social order in Chinese history, which sheds light on the monumental transformation of China. Moreover, he is a recipient of several competitive grants for experimental research on education, particularly on the “left-behind” children in rural China.
