Most scholars have concurred that trade was a crucial factor in the Ottoman Empire’s incorporation in the world economy. This article examines this development from the vantage point of the 19th century Balkan commercial stratum. Balkan merchants created dynamic multiethnic networks that led to their own enrichment as well as deepened the process of uneven economic incorporation, even as several local productions continued to prosper.
