Abstract
Muskegon Lake's beneficial uses have been impaired by industrial pollution resulting in its listing as an Area of Concern under the Great Lakes Water Quality Agreement. Efforts to restore the shoreline and remediate contaminated sediments have significantly improved Muskegon Lake's water quality and habitat. It is now poised for removal from the AOC list. However, the economic value of these improvements was unclear. The research team used a travel cost model and hedonic model to estimate the economic value of lake-related recreation and changes in home sale prices resulting from shoreline restoration and remediation. The improvements led to a $7 million increase in home sale prices and additional recreation activity valued at $27 million per year.
