Sustaining the Commons: Maine's Lobster Gangs
Sustaining the Commons (2020)

Lecture
Description
Maine almost depleted its lobster fishery in the early 20th century. But thanks to the efforts of the lobster harvesters themselves, they've been able to sustain the fishery. They have a strong culture of following the rules and valuing their professional reputations. Harvesters also define and defend fishing territories within a harbor and with adjacent harbors. The harvesters collaborate to avoid the "tragedy of the commons."
