About Dr. Eric Marland

Dr. Eric Marland is a professor in Appalachian State University’s Department of Mathematical Sciences. He previously served as chair of the department. Marland's research focuses on the use of mathematical and statistical approaches to study biological and environmental systems. He has received funding from the National Science Foundation, NASA and the U.S. Forest Service for his research projects, including studies of carbon accounting and monitoring methodologies, carbon offset programs, forest carbon accounting approaches, and harvested wood product reporting and analysis.

Marland also has been involved in organizing professional development opportunities for university faculty across the country and in managing workshops in mathematical biology, mathematical modeling and humanistic mathematics. Prior to being named chair of his department, Marland participated in the Chancellor’s Academic Leadership Development Program at Appalachian.

Committed to advancing mathematics education, Marland and his wife, Kimberly, have been instrumental in bringing robotics and mathematics events to regional K-12 students. They participate in and organizing several events each year, including the popular Watauga SumoBot competition held as part of the North Carolina Science Festival. Marland has served as judge and coach for math and science teams, and both he and his wife were honored for their educational outreach by the Watauga Board of Education in 2015 and by the North Carolina Council of Teachers of Mathematics in 2016.
