Abstract

While reality therapy has proven to be an effective counseling intervention with a diverse array of clients, there can be cognitive difficulties in understanding aspects of the choice theory and reality therapy components when utilizing the approach with young children. One appropriate and potentially effective means of addressing such cognitive difficulties with this population is through play therapy. This manuscript will discuss the rationale for integrating the tenets of choice theory and reality therapy with those of play therapy and explain three creative and play-based techniques for working with young children.
