(2016)

Abstract
This thesis addresses the scholarly value of two oral history collections, "Japan at War" and "Railwaymen in the War" and how they relate to the existing body of literature on Japanese wartime conduct in World War II. The oral histories reveal a number of factors that contributed to the battlefield violence in Asia, but the biggest contribution these collections make to the historiography of Japanese war crimes and atrocities is the rare and fascinating personal perspectives of the perpetrators.
