Crossing Boundaries with Narratives: Making Space with Oral History in Community Service-Learning
Interreligous Pedagogy: Reflections and Applications in Honor of Juith A. Berling (2018)

Abstract
This chapter explains how oral history can be used as a strategy to empower people’s voices through community-engaged service-learning. Actively listening to and documenting the oral histories of community members not only involves students in knowledge production, but also enables them to build positive cross-cultural relationships in the process. Judith Berling’s signature “Open Space for Mutual Learning” approach, as well as her “Threads of Learning” process, are effective pedagogical framing for using narratives as the focus for community-based education. Applying Berling’s concepts not only enhances the service-learning experiences for the students and community members, but also creates a space and process for oral history collection to serve as a form of healing.
