Abstract
The article discusses the history of traditional Chinese medicine in the Bay Area of California. Particular focus is given to the lives of Chinese acupuncturists working in the Bay Area, including 20th-century practitioner Miriam Lee. Testimony from pseudonymous 21st-century practitioners is also presented. According to the author, practitioners have altered Chinese medicine to suit the needs of their local context. Details on the political and social aspects of acupuncture practice by ethnic Chinese Americans are presented. Other topics include the relationship between acupuncture and philosophy, community acupuncture clinics, and the licensing of acupuncture practitioners.
