Abstract
This chapter explores the multifaceted nature of faculty positions in family psychology and the various issues involved in preparing for a career in the field. It begins by addressing the defining dimensions of family psychology and the core competencies that define the field of study and training. The chapter touches briefly on two critical dimensions of training in the field that support these defining competencies: developing an understanding of the historical conceptual roots of family psychology and pursuing expertise in the methodologies that support the defining competencies. In turn, it next addresses the issues involved in developing programs of research and portfolios of teaching and service that reflect the basic trinity of faculty responsibility. The chapter concludes with considerations for developing a successful career as a faculty member in family psychology. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2019 APA, all rights reserved)
