About Ellen M. Gravallese

Ellen M. Gravallese, M.D., is Professor of Medicine and Myles J. McDonough Chair in Rheumatology at the University of Massachusetts Medical School, Chief of the Division of Rheumatology and Director of Translational Research for the Musculoskeletal Center of Excellence. She is Board Certified in Anatomic Pathology, Internal Medicine and Rheumatology.

Dr. Gravallese’s career focus has been in the areas of basic science investigation, the care of patients with rheumatic disease, and the training of young investigators and rheumatology fellows. Dr. Gravallese’s basic science laboratory has been devoted for the past 20 years to the study of the pathogenesis of rheumatoid arthritis (RA), with a particular interest in the fundamental mechanisms of bone and cartilage destruction. Her research has identified key molecular and cellular pathways in this disease and has contributed to the realization of new therapeutic agents, as well as to a change in focus of the treatment of RA towards disease modification, in addition to control of inflammation.

Dr. Gravallese is the recipient of the Sandoz Award for medical research, the McDuffie Award from the Arthritis Foundation, the Scholars in Medicine Award from Harvard Medical School, and the Physician Achievement Award from the University of Massachusetts. She was appointed as Physician-in-Chief Pro Tempore at the Hospital for Special Surgery, Cornell Medical School and as the Katherine Swan Ginsburg Visiting Professor at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, and has lectured nationally and internationally. Her research has been supported by the National Institutes of Health, the American College of Rheumatology and the Arthritis Foundation, as well as other agencies and foundations.
