Social Influence (2006)
  • Elizabeth V. Grace, San Jose State University
Abstract
The author gratefully acknowledges funding from the College of Business, San Jose State University. This paper presents a variety of cases, role‐playing exercises, and games that are useful applied instructional resources for those teaching about social influence in accounting. Social influence in accounting is exhibited in the selective timing and presentation of information, the role of accountants as experts and in negotiation processes, and the pressure on accountants to compromise professional responsibilities. Many of the resources reviewed are factually true, indicating the need for a wider understanding of accountants' influence on society and the enormous pressure faced by accountants in the performance of their jobs.
