New Prayers in the Stammheim Missal
Sewanee Medieval Colloquium (2021)

Abstract
An examination of the newly composed prayers for the feasts commemorating the death and the ordination of Saint Bernward of Hildesheim (d. 1022) in the Stammheim Missal (Los Angeles, J. Paul Getty Museum, MS 64), a manuscript created in the third quarter of the twelfth century at and for the Benedictine monastery of St. Michael's, which Bernward founded. Two sets of those prayers draw heavily on existing prayers for Saint Martin of Tours (d. 397). This paper argues that the reliance on prayers historically associated with Martin was a deliberate choice on the part of the monks of Saint Michael's to draw a connection between their founder and Martin, to whom Bernward was conspicuously devoted.
