Abstract
The Stammheim Missal (Los Angeles, J. Paul Getty Museum, MS 64), unquestionably produced at and for the Benedictine monastery of St. Michael’s at Hildesheim in northern Germany in the third quarter of the twelfth century, is a major monument of Christian typological art. This paper focuses on the forceful contribution of the missal’s calendar decoration—especially disks representing the typical number of hours of day and night in each month—to the message of the full-page miniatures: that the promise of Christian salvation was inherent in Creation.
