Abstract
A chapter in the commentary accompanying a facsimile of the Stammheim Missal (Los Angeles, J. Paul Getty Museum, MS 64), an illuminated manuscript made at and for the Benedictine monastery of St. Michael’s at Hildesheim in the third quarter of the twelfth century. The commentary, published both in German and in English, includes Kristen Collins, “Einführung”; Elizabeth C. Teviotdale, “Eine Beschreibung des Stammheimer Missales”; Christine Sciacca, “Liturgische Wege durch das Stammheimer Missale”; Nancy K. Turner, “Die Materialien und Techniken des Stammheimer Missales”; Gerhard Lutz, “Das Benediktinerkloster St. Michael in Hildesheim im 12. Jahrhundert in seinem kulturellen und geistigen Kontext.” Also included are indices of feast days and biblical readings and tables summarizing the missal’s contents. The description addresses the book's textual and visual contents, identifies the work of two artists and four scribes, and postulates the role of a pair of carved ivory panels in the manuscript's original binding.
